The Story

Zahar Ezekile Kuku was born and raised in Sudan, a land rich in culture but torn apart by the ravages of war. Her early years were marked by the simplicity and joy of family life, but these moments were overshadowed by the growing turmoil that engulfed her homeland. The constant conflict brought fear and uncertainty, and Zahar’s life became a daily struggle for survival.

As the crisis deepened, the war’s effects on Zahar’s life became unbearable. Her community was shattered, loved ones were lost, and the future seemed increasingly bleak. Faced with these harrowing circumstances, Zahar made the heart-wrenching decision to leave her home in search of safety and a chance for a new beginning. On January 4, 2014, she embarked on a perilous journey, passing through South Sudan with the hope of finding refuge.

Zahar’s journey was fraught with danger. The path to safety was long and arduous, filled with the constant threat of violence. Yet, her determination and will to survive kept her moving forward. On January 6, 2014, Zahar finally reached the Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya. There, she was received by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), a beacon of hope amidst the chaos she had fled.

In Kakuma, Zahar found a semblance of safety, but the security issues that had plagued her in Sudan continued to follow her. The camp, though a refuge, was not immune to violence and insecurity. Zahar lived in constant fear, her past traumas lingering as she tried to build a new life.

Despite these challenges, Zahar has shown remarkable resilience. She has navigated the complexities of camp life, striving to maintain her dignity and hope. Her story is one of survival against all odds, of a woman who refused to be broken by the horrors of war.

Zahar’s journey is far from over. She dreams of a life where she can live without fear, where she can rebuild and thrive. Her resilience and courage inspire those around her, but she needs support to find a permanent and safe home.
